About This Place

Nestled along the charming R. João Tavira in São Martinho, Funchal, Black Pearl stands out as a must-visit cafe for lovers of robust flavors and authentic Madeiran comfort food. This cozy spot uniquely balances casual dining with culinary excellence, especially notable for its dedication to gluten-free options—a rare find that has drawn praise from locals and travelers alike.

At Black Pearl, the menu reads like a celebration of Madeira’s iconic tastes fused with international flair. The star attraction here is undoubtedly the Bolo do Caco, a traditional garlic flatbread which the cafe elevates creatively as both a sandwich base and a standalone delight. Visitors rave about varieties such as the Black Pearl sandwich, Prego no Bolo do Caco à Black Pearl, and versions with bacon or tender picanha slices, each bite bursting with savory depth and the warm, slightly smoky notes of fresh garlic butter. It’s easy to see why a repeat visit to indulge in these sandwiches is a common refrain among patrons.

The beverage selection complements the menu perfectly, with a frothy, expertly crafted cappuccino providing a smooth, aromatic counterpoint to the food’s rich flavors, alongside refreshing fresh-squeezed orange juice and the local favorite, Cerveja Coral. The atmosphere invites relaxed enjoyment—quieter compared to bustling city spots but enlivened by friendly, attentive staff who effortlessly handle gluten-free requests, making each guest feel cared for and well attended.

Black Pearl’s commitment to quality and inclusivity shines through in their gluten-free bread options, enabling those with dietary restrictions to relish every item without compromise—a detail highlighted continuously by happy gluten-sensitive diners. The accompanying crispy fries, seasoned to perfection, round out a satisfying meal at a very reasonable price point. Whether it’s a quick lunch or a casual dinner, the ease of ordering, combined with consistently excellent food, defines the visitor experience here.

From the moment you settle into one of the quaint outdoor seats, savoring the interplay of fresh, savory flavors and the intimate, unpretentious setting, you’ll appreciate why this gem earns such glowing, heartfelt testimonials. Black Pearl isn’t just a cafe; it’s a place where culinary tradition meets heartfelt hospitality, creating a lasting impression that beckons you back again and again.

Excellent place for quick and delicious steak sandwiches. Other sandwiches, some salads and ice-cream also available. Everything can be made gluten free. They have gluten free bread so it's an easy switch.

Honestly, this was the best food spot I visited during my stay on Madeira. The typical "Madeira-Sandwitch" (Prego no Bolo do Caco) was perfect. The fries were amazing aswell, and the meal was just 8.25 € .

Located in a quiet alley area with nice outdoor seating. The bolo de caco ( garlic flat bread) sandwiches are very tasty here. The sauce along with the red onions goes so well together. The fries are well prepared and seasoned. The price is very reasonable of 8 euros for sandwich and fries.

Stopped here for lunch since they had gluten free sandwiches and was pleasantly surprised with the options. The server was knowledgeable and was able to explain things I couldn’t and could have. It ended up being a great lunch and super enjoyable. Definitely a go while in the city looking for a casual lunch.
